Owning a car with the Ontario G2 license
Owning a car with the Ontario G2 license is a real nightmare especially if you plan to buy a new car. The costs of the insurance is extremely high for the novice driver and almost impossible for someone with mediocre income to pay the car installments and insurance monthly along with gas and maintenance.
Lets talk more about this –
Canada and Ontario in general have three types of licenses :
- G1 – Kind of you need to write a written test and clear it to get this license. Its like a starting point for your Driving journey.
- G2 – With this type of license you can pretty much do everything as a G driver, you are free to rent or purchase a car
- G – This is the final step, where you are done with you licensing and taking all those rode tests. You need to wait for 8 months after getting your G2 license to apply for G license.
In this article we are talking about the G2 license as it is widely popular in Ontario, Canada. Almost thousands of people who arrive every year as immigrants obtain their G2 license in fairly a year’s time. Then starts the circus of owning or renting a car. If you are a family guy and need to purchase a car, you are a dead meat especially if you are the sole income earner in your home.
The insurance cost can be as high as 450 CAD for a novice driver with G2 (Talking about the mediocre car here). To add to it you have the neighborhood you stay, age, driving experience and this adds to the insurance costs as well.
When I spoke to few friends and colleagues about this, all I got to know was its a huge thing to own a car in Canada unless you earn real good money or you have a G license with lots of experience and no tickets. If you are renting a car with G2 you need to buy insurance separately at the time of renting. This costs you additional money as well apart from the car rental fee.
Everyone has to start at some point or the other and thats the whole idea of this, eventually the insurance costs drops with experience and time. Please do not get any tickets that shoots up the insurance costs right then.
So if you guys are new to Canada and looking to buy a new car with G2 license, God bless you with all the monthly installments, insurance costs, maintenance (dont forget the winter tires, gas, wash and the toll too) which is increasing by the day.
I heard and know that the U.S. is a lot better when it comes to the auto insurance rates and premiums.
I am really happy renting my car for now and save some money instead for investing. As I said, I need to own a car someday and thinking about that someday kind of wakes me up. Happy Driving folks !!
